Volunteer Storm Drain Labeling Initiative

Storm Drains: They're the gateway to our most treasured waterways, the Potomac River, the Occoquan River, and the Chesapeake Bay and almost no one knows it. But I'm not talking about the "St. Louis is the gateway to the mid-west" type of gateway. Storm drains are a more like a backdoor entrance.

Like most back-doors, things sneak in that aren't supposed to be there, like trash and chemicals, which come from driveways and on streets. So what can be done?

A little thing called education. And that is what our Storm Drain Labeling Program is really about. It is an initiative that uses plastic labels to educate citizens about the dangers of pollutants "sneaking" their way into the backdoor, in this case the storm drains.

For this program, we partnered with Prince William County Watershed Management Branch in what will be a multi-year effort that will label all eligible storm drains in Prince William County.

If you are interested in participating either as a group or individual or are a Home Owners Association and would like to have storm drain labels in your community, contact us at: (571) 285 3772 for more details.
